Here To Save You From Tears, Sunions® Tearless and Sweet Onions Are Back In Season
PARMA, ID - December 17, 2021 – Sunions® are America’s first tearless and sweet onions, and they’re back in season with a fresh crop now available on grocer’s shelves. These groundbreaking onions didn’t happen by accident. Sunions are a product of more than three decades of farming, research and development to achieve an uncompromising brand promise that each onion must be certified both tearless and sweet before shipping to retailers.
Why tearless? As a self-defense mechanism, when regular onions are cut, they release volatile compounds responsible for making your eyes tear up. Over time, breeders have been able to identify volatile onions using gas chromatography and naturally isolate and breed only the onions that would cause fewer tears when cut. Sunions are not genetically modified, but rather grown through an all-natural cross-breeding technique to save you from tears in the kitchen.
Sunions are also unique in that their rigorous testing process ensures a consistent flavor unlike anything else on the market. They actually grow sweeter the longer they’re stored, whereas other onions grow hotter and more pungent.
“Our products must pass three separate tests for flavor, crunch and tearlessness to determine their ship date,” said Sunions Customer Marketing Manager, Amanda Van Poperin. “This season’s crop is arriving to retailers now and estimated to be available through March, depending on supply.”
Sunions are grown domestically in Nevada, Utah, and Washington and available for purchase at retailers including Aldi, Food Lion, H-E-B, Meijer, Publix, Sam’s Club, Sprouts and Whole Foods. Sunions®, America’s first tearless and sweet onions, didn't happen by accident. The product of nearly 30 years of research and development via natural plant breeding methods, the onion is both tearless and sweet with a distinct crunch. Once harvested, Sunions follow a tightly controlled flavor protocol and are tested throughout storage until they reach maximum tearlessness and peak flavor. Then, and only then, do Sunions growers ship them to retailers around the country. There are plenty of reasons to cry– now onions don’t have to be one of them. Sunions are marketed and distributed exclusively by Onions 52 and Peri & Sons Farms.
